The ideas for this thesis are from my teaching experience with International children at KIA (Kunming International Academy) during my internship. It is the summery of teaching methods and results which was specifically focused on elementary level young beginners with non-Chinese background. This thesis is based on the research of mandarin teaching methods used with foreign children who do not like to study Chinese.The thesis will present some workable and effective ways to change student’s attitudes and illustrate how to meet the purpose of mandarin program. The research done is to help teachers who are in the field of teaching Chinese as a Second Language, especially for those teaching the lower Elementary levels.As a new Chinese teacher in KIA, I am surrounded by some active, cute and yet naughty first graders. What are good ways to help them enjoy Chinese class? This has to be the first point to begin with. Having the proper discipline and "loving others as yourself, a Christian principle, are the key methods to success. These methods brought the children back on the right learning track and finally helped the teacher to reach the teaching goal. Discipline which was taught in classroom was favorable stimulation to encourage young learners to study hard and behave in proper manner. It proved to be better than the traditional oral method, because it protects students from improper evaluation or verbal abuse given by the teacher. The first graders in second language learning are not required to practice massive a mounts of hand writing of Chinese characters like natives of the same age. The teaching approach for non-Chinese language back ground students is basically only in listening and speaking. Gestures and theme related games are excellent tools to help children obtain their second language. It’s not only interesting but also within their realm of understanding ability. The methods of Teaching Chinese as a Second language tend to be more individualistic and diversified in the future.
