Based on the stage of social development, the paper separated the time ofdissemination of Christmas in China into4parts: the feudal period, the end of the QingDynasty to the period of the Republic of China, the period of the foundation of People’sRepublic of China and the period of rapid development of economy. Main channel ofdissemination of Christmas was hype, the following channels contained personalinteraction, English education, artistic works and religion. There were two reasons thatChristmas disseminated in China, one was cultural infiltration which includedsuperficial infiltration and profound infiltration. The other was influences betweenChinese and western culture, Chinese traditional culture could not meet people’sdemands while western culture seemed more suited to their needs.The paper analyzed time and situation of acceptances of Christmas in China.Christmas was spread after the entrance of global market. Christmas spread from eastChina to west China, from developed region to undeveloped region, the audient ofChristmas was mainly highly educated young people. The striking traits of Christmas inChina were weakening of religion, strengthening of commerce and dissemination ofentertainment. Those were related to people’s requirement. The material requisitebecame more and more strong with the development of economy; people need a festivalthat combined commerce, entertainment and amusement to meet their demands.The paper treated the influences of Christmas in China. Christmas effected manyparts of Chinese social, included emotion, economic and trade, also culture values. Foremotion respect, Christmas had promoted people’s view on love and friendship becauseof its passionate and kind expression; but it did not change Chinese inherent view ofethics. For economic and trade respect, it had formed industrial chains, trade companiesused many promotion strategies to push up sales. Consumer also changed their spendingpattern, increased their consumptive level and ascended their consumption trendbecause of Christmas. For culture respect, Christmas attacked the traditional culturalvalues, changed the implied character of Chinese people and showed materialism,hedonism as well as individualism to Chinese audience. Christmas had attacked thetraditional festivals of China, too. People had been getting into celebrate western festivals like Christmas, ignored the traditional ones, which confront traditional festivalswith acid test. Traditional festival should utilize the successful experiences of westernfestival; draw the strong points of western festival to offset its own weakness, so as tocarry forward the fine tradition and culture of Chinese nation.
