With the in-depth development of education, people are paying increasingly growing attention to the popularization of education and the dissemination of scientific knowledge. There is a growing demand for excellent foreign popular scientific articles.Material selected during this translation practice is a popular science book entitled Symmetry: The Ordering Principle which aims to elucidate the omnipresent phenomenon of symmetry. It not only covers a wide range of fields, including mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics and other natural science but also the fields of humanities such as politics and history. The source text features in vivid language and rich contents. This translation practice has not only strengthened the translator’s skills but also helped him acquire much interesting scientific knowledge and feel the magic and speciality of nature so as to let more readers understand the role of symmetry in human society. The difficulty of this translation practice is that the original text’s expression is quite lively, the sentence structure is complex, many long sentences exist and quite a few vocabularies in natural science and social science are involved. In order to get the right understanding, the translator needs to combine the context and professional knowledge. In view of characteristics of the source text and the language expression, the translator chooses Katharina Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory as the guidance theory in translation and uses the theory to standardize the whole process of translation. And then through the combination of various translation strategies and methods, the translator analyzed and solved many difficulties during the translation practice. This practice report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the main content of the source text as well as the purpose and significance of the topic. In the second chapter, the translator analyzes and summarizes the current situation of the research on text typology theory by experts and scholars at home and abroad. The translator, under the premise of combination between theories of predecessors and the translation of the source text, further explores the role of the text typology theory in translation practice. The third chapter is a brief introduction to the translation project. It mainly tells the translator’s preparations for pretranslation and the difficulties and corresponding solutions during the practice. In the fourth chapter, the translator, through the concrete cases, analyzes the guiding significance of the text typology to this translation practice. These cases expound the practical significance of the theory from five aspects: normative terms, domesticating rhetoric, explicit logic, simplified expression and language perspicuity. The last chapter is a summary of the whole translation project, which describes the gains and deficiencies of this translation practice.
