Translation Of Historical Text From The Text Typology Perspective

History of the War of the Succession in Spain was written by Philip Henry Stanhope,which briefly introduces the battle between the French Bourbon dynasty and the Austrian Habsburg dynasty for the Spanish throne.This book is an informative work with a rich content and has a very detailed record of the time,characters,and locations of the throne battles in Spanish.It is of high value for the study of historical texts.This report starts from the Chinese translation practice of Chapter 8 of History of the War of the Succession in Spain,and discusses how the Newmark's Text typology can guide translation practice.Newmark's proposed text can be roughly divided into three types,namely informative function text,vocative function text and expressive function text.And each type of text sometimes does not have a single function.According to this theory,the author believes that historical texts have both informative and vocative functions.Newmark believes that communicative translation strategies are needed for informative texts and vocative texts,while semantic translation strategies are needed for expressive texts.But both communicative translation and semantic translation use a large number of translation methods.Under the guidance of Newmark's text function theory,the author uses historical texts as the representative and applies the communicative translation strategy and semantic translation strategy to explore the most commonly used translation techniques and translation methods based on previous studies.According to the two main functions of historical texts,the author uses the most commonly used translation methods and techniques,such as amplification,deletion,omission,combination and conversion.The author believes that the translation of such texts should focus on how to pass the original information to the target language more accurately,that is,to better convey the function of historical and cultural information,and to achieve communicative purposes.
