The clay sculpture, as a type of ancient and independent art, is a combination ofclay sculpturing and painting. In China, The clay sculpture has a very long historyand it can even be traced back to prehistoric times. In Shandong, china, it appearedas early as in Dawenkou Culture and Longshan Culture. The northern farmers’Modesty, Shandong men’s unconstrained and Confucianism produce a subtleinfluence, making it the colorful and heavy regional characteristics of the Shandongregion. Now days the clay sculpture industry is flourishing in Tai’an, Binzhou, Linyi,Gaomi, Weifang etc, especially in Gaomi. The Gaomi clay sculpture has been in thelist of the first national intangible heritage protection program. In contemporary newlife and new culture, the development, support, inheritance, protection ofnon-material cultural heritage becomes even more important.I have been trying to analyze its design, color, decorative pattern and otherartistic features by working and collecting in the field, referring and sorting out thelocal documents. I summarized what the Gaomi clay sculpture had been pursuingand traced the aesthetic appreciation on China folk art and even made anexperimental exploration on how folk art can be applied in the modern ArtisticDesign.In today’s social context, we should pay more attention to discovering ourChinese folk art resources, to exploring and studying the origins and culture. Thenwe can better understand the essence of folk art and the philosophy of traditionalChinese culture in a design’s perspective. We can combine the modern visual Artswith the essence of traditional culture. This paper, as a result of specific stating theconcerning theorys and designing related experiments, is trying to be of some help inproviding some reference in combining modern design and folk culture.
