After the Second World War, consecutive interpretation has developed towardsprofessionalism while the interpretation service market has been subdivided intovarious categories. There are cases in which interpreters have to do sight translationexcellently. The growing demand of the market stimulates scholars and trainers tostudy the interpretation theory and skills in an in-depth way. Compared withtraditional interpretation researches, the study of sight translation is still in need ofdevelopment. Although many researches consider ST as a variant of interpretation, very few venture into the effect of ST training on CI performance. This paper aims to study the effect of ST training on English-Chinese CIperformance from the perspective of error types. This paper firstly reviews Gile’sEffort Model and researches on language input and output so that similarities anddifferences between ST and CI can be reflected. Then, this paper reviews researcheson the effect of ST training on CI performance, most of which are qualitative studiesfrom similar perspectives. By contrast, the Error Analysis Theory which is seldomapplied in interpretation study can assess interpreters’ performances in such a detailedand systematic way that the effect of ST on CI can be better assessed. To be more specific, this experimental study aims to address the researchquestions of―whether ST training helps improve overall performance inEnglish-Chinese CI‖and―in what aspect does ST training help improveEnglish-Chinese CI performance‖. Data such as the recording of subjects’interpretations and questionnaires are collected while analysis is carried out in theframework of Error Analysis Theory. The major findings are:1. ST training can helpsubjects improve overall performance in English-Chinese CI;2. ST training can helpsubjects improve English-Chinese CI performances mainly in the aspects of―repeating words‖,―pause‖and―self-correction‖.
