| At the information age, news has become an indispensable part in people’s life. English news undoubtedly opens a window for Chinese to see the world and its Chinese translation plays a significant role in the communication between western countries and China. A study on the strategies and methods of translating news English is sure to be of vital importance.The present paper is aimed at an in-depth discussion of the translation methods of news English under the guidance of Skopos theory. First, a brief introduction is given to the key points of Skopos theory and its guiding significance to the translation of news English. Second, the language features of news English are expounded from the aspects of vocabulary and sentence, with the focus on familiar words with new meanings, brief words, frequent use of proper nouns and passive voice. Finally, with Skopos theory as the guiding principle and according to the language features of news English, the present author elaborates with a great number of examples on the corresponding translation methods such as extension of semantic meaning, amplification, skillful use of four words, explanatory note, and voice transformation. It is found that Skopos theory is very important in the translation of news English, which makes the translators can appropriately choose translation methods according to the features of news English and its readers. |
