“A translation with commentary is a form of introspective and retrospective researchwhere you yourself translate a text and at the same time write a commentary on your owntranslation process. One value of such research lies in the contribution that increasedself-awareness can make to translation quality.”(Williams&Chesterman,2002) This thesis isa reflective research on C-E translation of theories and skills of make-up. The translation isbased on a Chinese material titled “The Pursuit of Beauty----a Selection of Make-up Theoriesand Skills” and I took part in the translation of two chapters. Now the book (including theoriginal material and the translated version) has been formally published by Jilin Science andLiterature Press in two languages with the Chinese version in the front and the Englishversion in the back. The selected part is mainly about the make-up for the rural young people, historicalfigures, hosts and special effect. During the translation process, different translation strategiessuch as amplification, omission, replacement, free translation, division and combination ofsentences are used to solve different translation problems. Generally speaking, the thesis ismainly composed of four parts including the first part introduction, the second part source textanalysis, the third part translation process, theories and strategies and the last part conclusion. The aim of translation is to let more people in the world understand Chinese make-upculture and master some practical make-up skills from the translation material. And thepurpose of the thesis is through a deep introspective thinking about the whole translationprocess we can gain some valuable experience beneficial to our future translation practice. Moreover, on the basis of Nida functional theory, I, as the translator, try to make thetranslation equal to the origin work on the respect of words, sentences, discourse and style. Assome of the content is related to Chinese traditional culture which is a very heated topic intranslation field and is winning more and more attention from the world in recent years, someof the translation skills listed in this thesis can be used as examples for later translators tostudy, compare, improve and stimulate inspirations. The skills can also be used to translateother Chinese works related to Chinese traditional culture so that more foreigners will cometo know China and appreciate the beauty of Chinese culture. In addition, the limitations listedin this thesis can also inspire new thinking.
