The Study Of Eagleton’s Literature And Culture Theory

Terry Eagleton is the famous20th century British Marxist theoretician, his theoreticalanalysis not only permeates with the tradition of British literary criticism, and cares for theliving conditions of all mankind.He admits that the literature is the ideology of productioncaused by people hot literary criticism of Marxism.Literary theory has been graduallyreplaced by cultural theory, and based on the philosophy of Marxism, he puts forward tosocialist culture solutions and criticizes the limitations of the postmodern cultural theory.This thesis is divided into an introduction, body, conclusion of three parts.The introduction is a brief introduction of the Eagleton identity background, and thenanalyzes the ideological course. His theory involves turning from literature to culture.Hisliterary ideology and political criticism theory research more fully in the internal study, whilethe research of post-modern cultural theory is the less in study. So,my paper focuses on hispost-modernism and cultural theoretical limitations of reflection and renewal.Chapter I discusses the flow process of the connotation of the theory of ideology:theconcept of Tracy’s study of ideology, the false ideology of Marx, theory of alienation ofLukacs, and the ideology of the cultural hegemony of Gramsci, Althusser’s awareness form ofthe theory of the state apparatus. Based on the previous theoretical basis, Eagleton analyzesthe six aspects of the theory of ideology.Chapter II analyzes the process of the Eagleton’s ideology theory.literature is a valuejudgment, which is related with political power. Therefore, literary criticism is politicalcriticism, and critics should get rid of the false ideology and create socialism works.Chapter III analyzes the postmodernism and cultural theory. From the perspective ofideological and cultural style of modernism, he thinks that postmodernism pursuits freedom,deconstructs the concepts of truth, morality, norms, universal notion of modernity. It onlyproceeds from the cultural ideas from the political practice,while it can not bring about theliberation of the people.So Eagleton argues that the ideology of Marxism can unite all thepeople to realize the socialist ideal,and get completely self-realization.Conclusion：A brief review of the the Eagleton’s literary and cultural theory points outthat his theory is in purpose of the meaning of life to pursue,and completes self-realizationbased on the basis of reciprocity.
