The popular language is not only a language phenomenon but also a culturephenomenon and a social phenomenon as well. With the increasing development ofChinese society and international communication, Chinese words are expandingrapidly. The popular Chinese language is, therefore, being paid special attention to bythe whole society just because it is a leading language reflecting social culturephenomenon. With the rapid development of economics, more and more people from othercountries have come to China since China’s reform and opening up. They desire tolearn about China’s5000-year civilization. They want to experience Chinese people’slife with the help of learning temporary Chinese. Meanwhile, the popular Chineselanguage is becoming their biggest obstacle, so we should lay enough emphasis on itin our teaching. My subject is the teaching of the popular language in teaching Chinese as aforeign language. Based on the former research, I’d like to put forwards my owndefinition of the popular language, state the meaning of my research and demonstratethe current situations of it.My paper will show the current situations of the teacher’s “teach” and thestudent’s “learn” in the teaching of the popular Chinese language by means of doingquestionnaires, which will be analyzed so that we’ll find the confusions in ourteaching. I will do the following two teaching suggestions. One is to do some researchinto teaching attitudes, teaching principles, teaching curriculums and teachingmaterials. The other is to give my own ideas about teaching methodology. I sincerelyhope all what I have done will be of some value to the teaching of the popularlanguage in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
