This is a translation project report for Building World-Class Universities inChina: Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The original text is taken from the secondchapter of the book The Road to Academic Excellence: The Making of World-ClassResearch Universities, co-edited by Philip G. Altbach, American higher educationalist,and Jamil Salmi, coordinator of the World Bank’s tertiary education program and themember of UK Leadership Foundation for Higher Education. The text is an educationreport of ten thousand words written in English. Following a brief introduction to thebackground of the translation project, the significance of the project, and the analysisof the original text, this report takes the Functional Equivalence Theory of Nida as thetheoretical basis and summarizes the difficulties the translator has encountered in thetranslation and discusses the methods of handling them, including literal and freetranslation, amplification and omission, division, and conversion. The translator alsocombines her experience in the translation and points out the importance of applyingFunctional Equivalence Theory in education report translation.
