This is a translation project report on An Essay on Crime and Punishment byCesare Beccaria, of Which Chapter Six to Chapter Twenty-five make an intact andclear statement: punishment should be in proportion to the crime.1) the principle ofappropriate proportion between crime and punishment is declared in Chapter Six.2)the right classification and measurement are the first step towards the establishment ofappropriate proportion between crime and punishment, which is studied in ChapterSeven to Chapter Eleven.3)To have a clear conception of the purpose of thepunishment is necessary to ensure the just proportion between crime and punishment, which is discussed in Chapter Twelve.4) To judge whether an action is a crime or notis very importance as well. Chapter Thirteen to Chapter Nineteen explores the judicialprocess of an crime, criticizing the unjust torture and unnecessary oaths in the trial.5)From Chapter Twenty to Chapter Twenty-five, the author discusses the punishmentsthat are applicable to a certain crime. The foregoing are the reasons why I have chosenChapter Six to Chapter Twenty-five to be the subject of this report. This report isdivided into four parts. First part is the introduction to the translation project, including its background, objects and meanings. Second part is the introduction to thetext I have chosen, including its author, contents, evaluation of the original text andthe language characteristics of the original text. As to the language characteristics, there are two prominent aspects.1) long and complex sentences;2) philosophicthought and principles of the law. Both of them impose obstacles in understanding.Third part is solutions targeting certain difficulties. The methods adopted in this reportcontain the Breaking-up of Long Sentences, Conversion between Active Voice andPassive Voice and Grammatical Transformation of Words. Last but not least, the experience and lessons I have gained from this translation project.
