A Translation Report On Chapter Three Of The Constitutional Systems Of The Australian States And Territories

This is a report on the translation of Chapter Three of The Constitutional Systems of the Australian States and Territories,aiming to discuss the translation of the passive voice sentences.This book,published by Cambridge University Press,outlines the constitutional systems of the six Australian states and ten Commonwealth territories and the third chapter of it is concerned with the legislature.In the process of translating the source text,the author has encountered a large number of the passive voice sentences,which is not only a striking linguistic feature of the source text but also causes much trouble for effective translation.Therefore,a good translation of the passive voice sentences is of great importance in producing a qualified Chinese version of the source text.In this report,the author firstly makes an overview of the passive voice,demonstrating its definition and functions,carrying out a contrastive study on the forms of the passive voice and introducing the previous studies on the translation techniques of the passive voice.Then,combining with the translation practice,the author proposes three techniques to translate the passive voice sentences by analyzing the examples in the source text,i.e.translating into a Chinese active sentence,translating into a Chinese passive sentence and translating into a Chinese non-subject sentence.Finally,the author draws a conclusion to summarize the translation experience and states the limitations.
