A Report On The Translation Of Chinese Thinking Mode(Chapter Six&Part One Of Conclusion)

This paper is a translation project report on Chinese Thinking Mode by Prof.Wu Chun. Chapter Six and Part One of Conclusion is the source text. Chapter SixCollection of Astronomical Data deals with cultural background in which thinking ofcollection of astronomical data came into being and the three stages it has undergonenamely recording, measuring&calculation and mathematical calculation. It alsogives analysis on reasons for the highly developed thinking of data collection andmakes a contrast between China and Greece, after which comes to the conclusionthat Chinese stress value of numbers and recording while Greeks value Geometryand graphics. Part one of conclusion gives a summary of the essence of Chinesethinking from five aspects. Taking the source text as the research object, this reportgives a brief introduction to the translation project and background of the source text.A large sum of culture-loaded words, classical Chinese and technical terms is asignificant barricade for Chinese-English translation. The author believes that thewhole project should be done under the guidance of Hans Vermeer’s Skopos theory.Translation methods including literal translation, free translation, paraphrase,combination and conversion will effectively present characteristics and culturalinformation of the source text. The report also lists abundant examples in whichthese translation methods are employed and summarizes experience, lessons andproblems of the project, which is a good example for translation of social sciencetexts in the future.
