The structure of Chinese idioms is relatively fixed, but again with the flexibilitycombined with the fixity in the structure. The touch of colloquial expression, based onsemantics, is only "descriptive", not "representative". It is very difficult for Chineselanguage learners accurately grasp and use. Therefore, they seldom use the idiomorally or in writing, in order to avoid misunderstanding. The teaching of modernChinese idioms becomes one of the most difficulties in TCFL (Teaching Chinese as aForeign Language). On the basis of previous studies, this dissertation analyzed theChinese idioms from the perspective of syntax, semantics, pragmatics, which selectedfrom nine sets of textbooks of TCFL. Strategies of teaching idioms are proposed inthe paper. It also suggests the selection and composition of Chinese idioms fortextbooks for beginner, intermediate and advanced level.There are four chapters showing as below:Chapter one is an introduction. First, it states the reasons and purposes of thisresearch. Second, it introduces the research conditions of idioms and phrases of TCFL.In the third part, the scope, content and the focus and difficulties of this study havebeen described.Chapter two is divided into two parts, which contains the definition of Chineseidiom and characteristics of it.Chapter three is about the investigation and analysis of the idioms in TeachingChinese as a Foreign Language textbook. It starts with arranging nine sets textbooksin the beginner, intermediate and advanced order, and studies the idioms in thetextbooks. After that, the perspective of syntax, semantics and pragmatics of idioms,which selected from9sets of textbooks of Chinese as a Foreign Language, will beanalyzed.Chapter Four proposed methods of the teaching strategies and the preparation ofteaching materials for idioms in TCFL. Firstly, the strategies are introduced in contextteaching, culture teaching and contrast teaching. Then, the suggestion is presented inthe selection of Chinese idioms and preparation of exercises for beginner, intermediate and advanced level.
