Along with the prosperity of Chinese contemporary popular literature,workplace novel, one of the mass literatures, has been attracting more and moreattention. With the development of the global economy, as a kind of goods, bookshave been gradually going out of the limit of area, spreading not only among thenational readers, but to serve the readers all around the world. How to make a book bewell accepted in other countries with different cultures is an issue related with variousaspects of translation. Since its publication of2008, Du Lala’s Promotion Diary hasbeen a great success and been listed as the top bestselling novel. Its unique view point,practical value and enormous circulation also attract the attention of some foreignmainstream media, such as CNN and The New Yorker. In order to spread thisflourishing literature abroad, and make more English readers learn about the real andrepresentative workplace life in China, the author chooses it to do her translationpractice. During the translation of Du Lala’s Promotion Diary, the author tries toanalyze the formulating of translation methods, translation practice and how toachieve better translation effect. In this way, this thesis is supposed to provide somereferences for the translation of Chinese workplace novels in the future.Based on the systematic study and comparison of the Chinese and westerntranslation theories, the author finds that Skopos rule under German functionalisttheory is fit for guiding workplace novel translation. The core theory of this translation school is “Skopostheorie,†which thinks that the need of the target textreaders and the communicative purpose of the translation are the leading reasons todecide which translation method to use. Because of action theory,“Skopostheorieâ€thinks that translation is also a kind of action. People’s actions have their purpose, inthis way, translation is a purposeful action, which happens in a certain environmentand under a certain cultural background, so when people translate, they have toconsider a lot of extra-textual factors besides intra-textual factors. Specifically, it hasthree basic principles: Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, and Skopos rule isthe core one. The translator has to apply some translation methods in order to cater forthe reading habits of the target readers, better spread Chinese culture and win theirrecognition, she applies some necessary translation strategies and methods, likeforeignizing and contextual method. Based on the Skopos rule, this article firstlyintroduces the authorã€main contentã€feature of workplace novel and reason to choosethe text. Then the author roughly describes the process of translation. Thirdly, truthand beauty are usually considered the souls of translation, so the author hereby aimsto discuss the issue of how to achieve truth and beauty during her translation of thenovel from the perspective of Skopos rule. In this article, the truth is represented bycorrect comprehension and accurate expression, requiring the true understanding ofeach word and sentence of the original text in target language; while the beauty oftranslation is reflected by reproduction of the artistic conception, which is expressedthrough the reproduction of the images of characters and the tone of original dialogues.With many translation examples, the author discusses the strategies and methods she adopts under the Skopos rule. Finally, the conclusion is reached that the Skopos rule isfit for the guidance of workplace novel translation, in light of which they can be betterintroduced abroad, and this will have great influence on the spread of Chinese massliterature. |
