The book Imperial Spain: 1469-1716(Chapter Eight)is selected as the source text of this translation report and its translation is guided by Vermeer’s skopos theory.Imperial Spain:1469-1716,a book of high academic value about the history of the imperial Spain,reveals how the Spain crown undergoes the process from prosperity to its decline.The whole translation report contains five chapters.In Chapter One,the author of this report introduces the background,the purpose and the significance of this project.In Chapter Two,the author of this report firstly illustrates what preparations have been made through analyzing the linguistic features of the source text at the lexical and syntactical level and then briefly introduces the translation process by narrating how the target text is produced.The theoretical framework is introduced in Chapter Three in which the historical overview of German functionalism and Vermeer’s skopos theory have been expounded.In Chapter Four,the author of this report introduces the skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule as well as the translation methods adopted under the guidance of the three rules.In Chapter Five,major findings,limitations and suggestions are included.This report aims to present how the historical text is translated from English to Chinese under the guidance of the skopos theory in order to provide a reference for similar translation studies in the future.Besides,translation methods like division,combination and amplification have been put forward to deal with such translation difficulties as how to handle proper nouns,culture-loaded words and long sentences with complex structures.In addition,the translated text is expected to provide some reference for those target readers who are interested in or study the history of the imperial Spain. |
