As globalization speeds up, Chinese films are expected not only to take moremarket shares in world screenland, but also to shoulder the great responsibility ofintroducing a splendid Chinese culture. To make English-speaking audience watchChinese movies and understand it, besides movie dubbing, subtitle translation is animportant communicative method.Without good subtitle translation, the message movie sends is difficult foraudience to understand, so, subtitle translation plays a very important role incommunication between different countries, however, people pay little attention tothis field. The prosperity of the movies of movie industry is in sharp contrast with thepoor quality of subtitling, which will hinder the audience from appreciating the filmand make the cultural communication less effective. The quality of subtitling is yet tobe improved.The Skopostheorie (purpose) of film subtitle translation is to provide, within theconstraints of time and space, a well-translated subtitle which can contribute to a goodunderstanding of what is happening on the screen.Skopostheorie is used as the theoretical framework of this thesis. The authormakes a case study of Painted SkinⅠ and Painted Skin Ⅱ to explore differentapproaches to produce the audience-oriented translation. There are many folk customs,Historical allusions, Chinese philosophy and Traditional Chinese Medicine in the film,all of which are very difficult for translators to deal with. Based on these translationdifficulties, the author should adopt corresponding translation strategies. Finallyaccomplish the successful Chinese culture spread and effective interculturalcommunication. At the same time, author point out some improper subtitletranslations and correct them.
