The Research Of Liang Shiyi’s Action After Hongxian Monarchy(1916～1918)

Hongxian Monarchy failed, Yuan Shih-kai passed away due to illness. Then the publicopinions at home and abroad and patriots demanded that the henchman of emperor playeda important role in Yuan’s empire must be punished. Liang shiyi as the leader of the OldTraffic Clique had to bear the brunt of the blame. His politics career faced a huge crisis.Faced with the blame from Nation Protection Army, Northern Warlords Government ofChina and the northern warlords, Liang Shiyi and the other members of the Old TrafficClique tried their best to control the negative influence into minimum. However, their evilactions eventually be punished. Liang Shiyi had to leave the political arena and escaped toHong Kong. During the period in Hong Kong, Liang Shiyi paid a close attention to theBeijing political situation. What’s more, he still exerted his influence in politics through theOld Traffic Clique. Finally, he returned to the political arena because he and the Old TrafficClique play an important role in the struggle to oppose Zhang Xun’s restoration ofdethroned monarch. Since he made the acquaintance of Yuan Shih-kai, Liang Shiyi madelots of choices to influence his life, especially from the time of Yuan Shih-kai’s death (June,1916) to he returned to Beijing (February,1918). In these years, Liang Shiyi had too manyactions. On the other hand, mass media had large numbers of news reports about Liang.Liang Shiyi’s actions in this period reflected the fact that is political situation affects one’smentality and his fate.
