The thesis is completed on the basis on the translation of a legal text and reflections on the questions arose in the translation process. One of the original texts is Exclusive Patent Licence Agreement, and the other is a notarial certificate as an appendix to the agreement, both of which embody the typical features of English contracts. The idea of the thesis is to deepen the research and cognition on translation of English contracts through solving problems that arose in the translation process, and meanwhile to make clear how translation theories play a guiding role in translation practice. During the translation process, five questions arise:the question of terms of legal art, archaic words, the specific usage of ordinary words in English contracts, long sentences and conditional sentences, all of which are answered under the guidance of translation theories of Peter Newmark, including semantic translation and communicative translation strategy, and relevant methodologies. With the analysis of some typical cases obtained from the translation process, the thesis discusses translation methods of some special translation questions from the prospective of vocabulary, sentence structures and text in the English contract. Since the questions the author raises during the translation process are typical and common for those beginners who would like to make research on translation of English contracts, she hopes that her reflections on those questions could, to some extent, help them in their research.
