Since1990s, alongside with the urbanization process and theloosening of household registration policy, a larger population fromthe countryside is moving their entire families into the city to workor do business, in order for better development and higher economicincome. They have a comparatively longer time living in the city andsome even have the idea of permanently living in the city. Due to thisreason, China has not only produced a unique social group apart fromcity and countryside residents–floating population, but also thesecond generation of them–floating children. Compared with adults, floating children are lack of social experience and they are notmature in mentality. While faced with new lifestyle and schoolenvironment, they usually show difficulties in adaptation and evenflinch. Meanwhile, they are in the key phase for development ofpsychology and behavior which mean that they are vulnerable forexternal influence. The current living environment has become muchmore complicated than the former simpler life. Besides, the sense ofdeprivation compared with city children in terms of the system andeconomy can bring many obstacles for them to form a good selfimage and personality. There are full of fights against reality in theirlives, satisfaction for the current situation and the expectation for thefuture. Between anxiety and happiness, floating children are perhapsexperiencing the roughest time of their life. Of course, not allfloating children are troublemaking children. A harsh and painfulimmigrating life has also taught the children to live independently. Many floating children have shown their excellent qualities inoptimism, positivity, independence and warm-heart. They aregrowing healthily with the help of parents and social groups andthere are also many exemplary students among them. In order to understand better the personality characteristics offloating children, this paper has conducted research on floating childrenin literature research and survey method. The results show that floatingchildren display obvious scores in Eysenck Personality Questionnaire interms of the dimensions of introversion, extroversion, neuroticism andconcealing while the difference in psychoticism is not prominent. Thefloating children tend to be introvert, loner and not good at socialinteraction. They usually keep a distance from people. They are anxious, nervous and easily irritated with an unstable temperament. They have arelatively lower score in concealing as they are more innocent and lessmature than city children.Research shows that we can better understand floating children inorder to know their psychological health status and their problems. Moreover, we can analyze the reasons behind to propose somesuggestions to improve the personality development of floating children. It is expected that administrative departments, education department cantake reference and pay more attention to floating children and make thembetter adapt into city environment and guarantee their healthy growth.
