College English teaching plays an important role in the learners’development of the ability of language acquisition. Generally speaking, most of the teachers adopt the traditional teaching method, which is teacher-centered. In the traditional classroom, the students have to focus on the materials and the talking of the teacher. The students are passively accepting the knowledge. As time goes on, the students have a big chance to lose interest in English learning. Comparatively speaking, with the continuous development of the society, the link between people becomes more and more close. It is known that cooperation is a way of social interaction. Cooperation learning has become one of the main patterns in the contemporary teaching theories. By ways of mutual cooperation between teachers and students, teachers and students can inspire and complement each other so that teaching resources could be effectively integrated and utilized. Cooperation learning bases on the motivational theory and constructivism and so on. Johnson and his colleagues believe that learning motivation is generated by means of interpersonal process with the essence of a human interpersonal interaction to establish positive relations depending on each other. Thus, the author adopts cooperation learning in this college English reading and writing teaching and tries to find its effectiveness in the context of multi-media teaching. The author chooses Class One and Class Two in the Faculty of Law in Zhengzhou University of Light Industry as research subjects to do this research which consists of43freshmen respectively. The author chooses Class One as the experimental class and applies cooperation learning in this class. While Class Two is chosen as the control class and in this class the author uses the traditional teaching method. This research is conducted for two semesters. By doing an independent samples T-test between the experimental class and the control class before the study, the author finds that there is no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group before the conduction of the research. Therefore, this research on cooperation learning can be done by those two classes. In addition, there is no significant difference in the aspects of the total amount of the students, the boys to girls ratio of the students, the teaching content and so on. This research applies the instruments of questionnaires, pre-test and post-test, class observation and interview. Through the questionnaires, the author finds that most of the subjects hold a positive attitude toward cooperation learning and they have benefited a lot by ways of cooperative group learning. By class observation and interview, the author finds that cooperation learning can stimulate the students’motivation to contribute to English learning. Two independent samples T-tests and two paired samples T-tests are conducted by SPSS17.0. The data show that the English scores of the students in the experimental group have improved significantly compared with the control group. All in all, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of cooperation learning in college English reading and writing teaching. However, this study still has some drawbacks and there is also knowledge worthy of further study on cooperation learning.
