Modal verb is a comparatively weak point in Chinese research as well as a hardpoint to foreign students who learn Chinese as a second language. For the sake ofmaking foreign students learn Modal verb sooner and better, for the sake of increasingthe efficiency of teaching Chinese as a second language and of furthermore masteringthe Chinese, we analyse some common problems existed when foreign students arelearning Chinese, sum up the patterns of error analysis and study the causes offorming the error, making several suggestion for teaching Chinese as a secondlanguage.This thesis is divided into eight chapters:Chapter one: Point out the motives and significance of selective subject, thescope of research and theory and method have been used in this thesis.Chapter two: The achievements that former researchers have got are dividedinto two aspects, study of modal verb in body language study and in teaching Chineseas a second language.Chapter three: Contrasting Chinese modal verb with anxiliary verb in English.The result has shown that, many similarities and difference are existed betweenChinese modal verb and anxiliary in English. Knowing about their differences canfacilitate the foreseeing of teaching and help foreign students escape from theinterference of their mother tongue during Chinese learning.Chapter four: Calculates and analyzes the questionnaire. It introduces thedesigning work and the results of the questionnaire. Moreover, a careful analysis ismade on the students’ responses, and the reasons of errors occurred are discussed.Chapter five: Classification on the error of the modal verb. It makes astatistical study of the inter-language corpus data and questionnaire’s materials, anduse the error-analysis theory to classify the error types.Chapter six: Explanation for the causes brought the errors of the modal verb.We mainly analyze the reasons from four aspects: mother language, the targetlanguage, the learning strategy and the communication strategy, and the teachingfactors.Chapter seven: Focused on the problems and analysis above, several advicesof teaching have been made.Chapter eight: The conclusion.
