Since the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic period, the phylogeny of Chinese university goes by the name of misery of intellectual. People carried imagination about university and made a memo of the misery of intellectual, which could be called University Narration. For its careless omission and partial narration, Historical narration could not satisfy us, we turn our sight on Literary Narration.Based on humanistic perspective, this thesis makes an investigation into the way that modern literature manifested the imaginary and imagines university during about30years from1917to1949. This is a twofold spirit journey which concluding the "interpretation" of university and the survey of university from literary perspective.This thesis is divided into three parts, which are the preface, the straight matter, and the conclusion. The preface introduces the origin, framework, preset status, and significance of issue.The straight matter falls into3chapters:Chapter1:systematically unscrambling the relevant issues of "narration of university", which concluding the definition of "narration of university", analysis of the probability of "narration of university", summary of existing forms and narrative styles of "narration of university", contrast to narration of education and narration of growth, theoretical summary of "university image", and position of essential features of intellectual in university. Base on previous achievement, this chapter presents some creative ideas of this research and fill in a gap in this field to a certain degree.Chapter2:university life manifested by modern literature. Firstly, we explain the survival crisis that modern university students faced, which can help to understand various forms of university lives in literature. Then, we present different meaning of historical narration and literary narration in narrative events. In the contrast between their respective narrative strategies, the unique value of "university narration" in literary narration is definitely presented in front of us. With this in mind, we then unscramble the university lives in literary narration, and divide university lives into four categories, which are student strike, student life abroad, daily campus life, and social service. By this classification, we have drawn the brief outline of the diverse appearance of modern university lives. Chapter3:creative description of university image growing in diverse university lives under the crisis of meaning. In this chapter, we firstly review the spiritual growth process, and try to track the disappearance of modern university and modern literature by contracting to ourselves.The last part is the main conclusion of this thesis. The disappearance of modern university and modern literature in China lead to Chinese people’s lack of imagination and creativity for a long period, which is reflected in the form of frequent confusion. Therefore, it is necessary and pointed for remodeling university spirit to retrospect "university narration" in one-hundred-year literary history. Lots of new achievements are made with the help of mutual survey between literature and university in two different kinds of perspectives.
