The definition of self-handicapping is that when in the situation of achievement and evaluation, the individual takes the strategy of reducing effort or exaggerating the difficulties deliberately to avoid being related to the possible failure, such that maintain a good self-presentation in the eyes of others. In china, self-handicapping behavior is very common in the school with the situation of typical capacity evaluation. In the educational process, emphasis on the academic ability and focus on the achievements and results result in letting the score be the criterion of students’ability, which affects the assessment of students’self-worth directly. here, aiming at understanding characteristics and current status of self-handicapping in Chinese high school, the self-handicapping motive of high school students, the effects of self-handicapping, and the difference characteristics of self-handicapping in demographic data are revealed on the basis of self-worth theory. The results of study can be used to improve the learning quality of students by helping educators taking the corresponding measures to deal with different students and controlling the self-handicapping behavior timely.This paper investigates and studies582students from two high schools in Xian and Xianyang city by questionnaire, and explores relationship between the locus of control and self-handicapping. Conclusions are as follows:1. The significant differences of discipline type and students origin are existent inself-handicapping behaviors of high school students;2. The significant differences of gender and grade are existent in the locus of control of high school students;3. A high negative correlation between the internal control and self-handicapping behaviors of high school students, and a high negative correlation also between the powerful others, the opportunity factor and self-handicapping behaviors;4. Externals have more self-handicapping tendencies than internals, and the differences of self-handicapping behaviors are significant;5. To some extent, Opportunities of the locus of control factor can predict the generation of self-handicapping behavior,the predictive power of17.2%;On this basis, this paper proposes a series of corresponding measures of education intervene to control the self-handicapping behaviors, which include strengthening the cultivation of students’self-confidence and sense of trust, enhancing the inherent sense of responsibility and control, and cultivating the independence and self-learning ability by conducting the attribution training to students.
