Of all stages in the development of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language(TCFL), teaching material plays a vital role. It is the foundation of teaching, an important channel for the teachers to impart knowledge to the students and to improve the latter’s competence, and also the touchstone to testify the teachers’ teaching achievement as well as the degree of the student’s mastery of the language. The quality of Chinese teaching material will have an influence on the students’ enthusiasm on learning and have something to do the quality of teaching.Intensive reading is the main course taken by students studying abroad. It is the carrier of the elementary knowledge of Chinese learning like phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, and it plays an irreplaceable part in cultivating the learners’ listening, speaking, reading and writing ability. Elementary Chinese, an intensive reading material, is quite an inflential series which is affirmatively unique in its organization principle, as well as in its selection of the texts, vocabulary, and grammar points. Proceeding from an analysis of the Elementary Chinese’organization principle, texts, vocabulary, grammar points and exercises, this dissertation affirms its organization principle which stresses "structure—function—culture" combination, and points out the saving grace in its selection of texts, grammar points, and compilation of exercises, which emphasizes communication, embodies culture, and observes the rule of students’learning acquisition. However, with the development of TCFL and the study on teaching materials, Progressive Chinese of intensive reading, though having been used for six years since its publication, exposes certain limitations and insufficiencies in text, vocabulary, grammar and exercise. This dissertation, based on an overall analysis, then gives some of my suggestions and ideas on compiling the intensive reading materials for TCFL, which, I hope, can contribute to the project of TCFL.
