The ultimate objective of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language is to improve students’Chinese communication ability, and learning functional items is a quick and effective way to improve communication skills. Therefore, select the suitable function items is very important when Compiling Textbooks.This paper starts with the selection and arrangement of functional items, then, investigates the elementary Chinese textbooks in Thailand, mainly includes:the gross appearance of the function items; the average amount of each lesson; the proportion of functional items; the common function items in five textbooks; the frequency and order of each function items. Investigation results show that:the frequency and order of the appended of common functions items in five sets of teaching material nearly the same. They all following the principle of "easy to difficult","simple to the complex" and "learn the most useful first"Thailand, however, the functional selection criteria in the primary Chinese textbooks is not unified, specific reflect in the following three aspects:First, the number of functional items in five textbooks makes great difference; Second, the average amount of each lesson’s function item is not the same proportion; Third, the common function items in five sets of teaching materials are relatively small. Although the selected function items in five sets of teaching materials is relatively small, but they are the most fundamental and most commonly used functions in teaching Chinese, so we selected them as the core of primary Chinese. To compensate for the deficiencies of the less common in functional items, we sequentially selected the high frequency and practical function items in five sets of teaching materials as alternation.At the same time, we investigated the Thailand primary Chinese learners in Thailand, the survey results show the learning needs of primary students and senior students’ reflections and recommendations of the project on primary school over the function items. Accordingly, the paper generally investigate the following index:the function index of the common selected items in five sets of teaching materials, the use frequency index of five sets of textbooks and the demand index of each function items. From those three index results, the paper figure out which function items should be use in the primary Chinese textbooks in Thailand. Besides, we give some advise on selection criteria in the process of completing teaching materials, the functions outline and the teaching method.
