Mired in its own religious conflicts, ethnic disputes and extreme poverty, Indiawas only a geographical term to the United States. For Americans, India was only acountry that needed assistance from America rather than a friend or a rival of weight, which made India feel indignant. It was urgent for India to prove its power. Thenuclear test of India in1998shocked America greatly that a country like India whichwas long neglected should have destroyed the strategy of global nuclearnon-proliferation.This thesis aims at summarizing the main factors of influencing the America’sIndia policy and the effect on China, through analyzing the process of changing andadjusting its India policy after the nuclear test. The essay begins with narrating thecontent and changing process of American government’s policy towards India underClinton, Bush and Obama administration respectively. The thesis then analyzes andkeeps focus on the analysis of the main influence factors, which are reflected fromthree parts: the different attitudes toward the position of India’s national strength, consideration of Asia-pacific balance, and Pakistan. Finally, the paper explores theeffect on china, negative or positive, of America’s changing policy towards India, andpredicts which one will be the main stream in future. The U.S.-India relationship as a whole moves forward in a positive direction. Inconsideration of the Asia-Pacific equilibrium, ideological differences and the state’sglobal strategy, the United State’s policy adjustment towards India is doom to exertboth positive and negative influence on China. China should be prudent when treatingwith the constant warming US-India relations, adopting corresponding measures andformulating relevant policy to properly deal with the trilateral relationship amongChina, America and India.
