India is a great developing country. Thanks to the continue effects of the successive governments since its independence, now, India plays a important role in today’s world political and economic area. Due to the successful agricultural reform of the"green revolution", the construction of the industrial base and the successful operation of the software outsourcing industry, India economic develops at a high speed, with an average annual growth rate of7%-8%. It is noteworthy that India’s tourism industry plays an essential role. Many people believe that India tourism will have a brighter future due to the natural and geographical conditions and the rich cultural history. According to the World Tourism Organization statistics in2006, Global international tourist arrivals reached698million in2000, tourism revenues reached$595billion. Inbound tourists arrivals in India reached2.64milliom, the revenues is double. In recent years, tourist arrivals and revenues increased rapidly. According to the government of India ministry of tourism, tourist arrivals reached629million in2010, tourism revenues reached$14193million. Tourist arrivals reached629million in2011, tourism revenues reached$25863million. Thus, we can find the role of the tourism industry in India economic development. Tourism is a comprehensive industry. To some extent, it is a industry that need culture exchange and communication. Therefor, tourism plays a subtle influence in India social and cultural progress. This article tries to introduce India tourism development to explore the role of tourism in the process of modernization in India and find out the relationship between the industry and social development. Analyzing that India tourism is unfolding. It is have a minimal impact on India politics. On the contrary, the economic policies of successive Indian governments and political stability in India is the major reasons that affect the industry. Since independence, India tourism does a well work at increasing the foreign exchange earnings, promoting employment and coordinating the regional development. To the social-culture development, it is a double-edged sword. There are different traditions and religions in different regions, the tourism influence is positive in one place many became negatively in another region. Meanwhile, there are many problems, such as imperfect infrastructure, inefficient government work and so on. In summary, India tourism industry is new baby, along with the development of India tourism, it plays a potential role in modernization and in overall progress in India society now. It is believed that with the continuous development of tourism in India, the pace towards to the modernization will be more robust.
