Farmers' Political Participation Research During Social Transformation

The degree of farmers’participation in political affairs has a direct influence on the process of the political democratization of our country and plays an essential role in the development of the democratic politics of our country. Since China has entered a transition period of society, its rural economic, political and social structure has undergone tremendous changes. Farmers’awareness of democracy and political participation has been greatly strengthened and enhanced, political participation of farmers become a hot topic in academic research in recent years. This thesis takes the political participation of famers of social transformation in Laotian Village in Feng huang County in Hunan Province as the research subjects, employing political sociology approach, interviews and questionnaires and other research methods to analyze the situation of villagers’political participation. For the problems, and actively seek countermeasures.The thesis argues that farmers’political participation must proceed from reality, especially for the analysis of the basic structure of individual villages. It should start with the existing problems and explore the way of developing effective regional and national political participation to promote democratic politics in China.This thesis analyzes the constraints of the institutionalization of political participation of village farmers from the economic, institutional, cultural perspectives. It constructs the three-dimensional farmers’ countermeasure system of institutionalized political participation from the following five aspects:establishing a sound system of political participation, developing productive forces, cultivating participatory culture, improving the quality of farmers, establishing an orderly, rational sense of participation and regulating the specific behavior of grassroots governments. It provides constructive ideas and operational methods for the institutionalization of contemporary political participation of farmers.
