Public Service Functions Of Chorography

It is an age of competition in economy, science and technology as well asculture. A nation or a country can survive on the world not only based on powerfuleconomy but also culture with its features. As the representative of traditional culture,the Chinese local Chronicles culture focuses on the development of chorography,which embodies the profound and amazing charm of the Chinese culture andrepresents the heritage from historical culture to current culture. As a basic culturalundertaking, chorography has become a social systematic project in advancedsocialist culture construction, which inherits the past and forges ahead into the future.This article has discussed the public service functions of chorography, which is ofgreat significance for the further development of chorography, prosperity of socialistculture and enhancement of China’s cultural competitiveness.The thesis has discussed the public service functions of chorography from fouraspects. Firstly, from the formative factors of public service functions ofchorography, the article has summarized these functions including governmentsupporting, cultivation, history recording, publicity, development and reference, andits current functions for the promotion of tourist industry, product research anddevelopment, natural disaster prevention and handling, guidance for infrastructureand economic construction, cultural exchange and communications, and theenhancement of a sense of national pride and national cohesion. Secondly, this thesishas pointed out some defects in government supporting, cultivation, historyrecording, publicity, development and reference. Thirdly, the thesis has analyzedsystematically the reasons for the defects, which includes the effect ofeconomy-oriented development of the government, incomplete chorography workingmechanism, chorography revision behind closed doors, lagging of chorographyworking team, and incomplete public service systems of chorography. Fourthly, thethesis has put forward some countermeasures for the further development of publicservice functions of chorography, which include transformation of government’spublic service function, improving working mechanism of chorography,strengthening the public service consciousness of chorography department, teamconstruction of chorography, and public service system construction as well, etc.
