Sino-german Military Cooperation With The National Government's Military Modernization

The issue of military cooperation between Nanjing Government and Germany has been a hot topic in recent years. Their cooperation plays an important role in the military modernization of KMD. Researching the military cooperation can help us analyze the process of military modernization of KMT government.In the late 1920s, although Nanjing Government who represented big landlord and bourgeoisie had ended the long term separation and unified the whole china in form, the interior situation was not stable. On one hand, there are lots of local militants, who were against the KMT government; and the Red Army was threatening the foundation of KMT government; on the other hand, Japanese imperial government was ready to invade china.For the purpose of defending the potential threats from home and abroad, KMT government were actively in quest of military cooperation with the government of Germany, and eventually established the cooperation with German government in military field for ten years. This paper has chosen the period of 1928-1937 to introduce the cooperation between China and Germany and analyze its effects on the military modernization of KMT government in terms of material condition, system and culture.
