Higher education shoulders the mission of cultivating talents which includes notonly imparting knowledge and skills to the educatee but also cultivating them topossess morals, ambition and sound personality. As the important combination pointof the first productive forces, science&technology and the primary resources, humanresources, Higher education plays a decisive role in national development strategy.Our Party and Country always attaches great importance to it. Physical education, as acrucial educational means, has to undertake its tasks. With the rapid development ofthe Physical Education Reform in Colleges and Universities and introduction of newteaching concepts, problems in professional physical education in colleges anduniversities, such as emphasizing the form of PE teaching, emphasizing teaching butlearning or emphasizing achievements but teaching, become increasingly prominent.Meanwhile the traditional teaching methods face an unprecedented impact andchallenge. With consideration of individual conditions and adoption of properteaching methods, how to meet the needs of the students and their development in thefuture deserves our our deep thinking and it also places greater demands on thephysical education in colleges and universities.Nowadays PE has become a kind of culture, as well as a mature discipline. Thecontent of PE teaching expand to health education, psychological training, behaviorcriterion education, safety education and social adaptation. We notice that thediversification of teaching content and specialization of students’ learning make thesimple self learning difficult to satisfy the improvement of itself. With the continuousoptimization of students’ Knowledge structures and the increase of the amount of PEknowledge and skills, as for teachers, the PE teaching theory and methods arerequired to renew, improve and innovate.This paper focuses on the students matriculated in Jilin Institute of Physical Education in2009, majoring in track and field. With he methods of literatureconsultation, expert interview, questionnaire, experimentation, mathematical statisticsand logic analysis, this paper is based on the full understanding of small groupsteaching mode and the common feature of students majoring in PE. Through thereasonable grouping students are divided into respective small groups, and cut in thecrucial points in every stage, which makes the students can give full play to theirsubjective initiative at every stage of learning. Experimental results shows: smallgroups teaching mode can offer the students the most extended freedom, stimulatetheir PE learning interest by coordination and satisfy their needs of PE skills learning.With direct learning experience, indirect received experience and the enrichment oftheoretical knowledge, this would help the students form the good study motive, lay asolid foundation for their longterm study and improve their comprehensive ability.
