With the rapid development of economy and society in21stcentury, English, as the mostwidely used language in the world, is becoming more and more important. During the fourlanguage skills–listening, speaking, reading and writing, reading takes a very important role.Reading is the most fundamental method for modern human to understand the society. However,there still exist many problems in our English reading teaching. Owning to the traditionalteaching method and examination-oriented education system, English teacher lays too muchfocus on the learning of vocabulary and grammar knowledge, while ignores the learning ofbackground knowledge and the cultivation of reading strategies. Therefore, students show nointerest in English reading and even appear reading anxiety.Advance organizer was a concept proposed by American cognitive psychologist Ausubelin1960s, which refers to the existing background materials with universal meaning in thecognitive structure. And then it develops with the follow-up study of Mayer and others. Theteaching model of advance organizer can build up a bridge between what students have knownand what they need to learn so as to promote the understanding of new knowledge and theretention of old knowledge. Therefore, the teaching model of advance organizer was put intouse in English reading teaching in this study. On the basis of a thorough review of the literature,experiment, survey questionnaires and interviews, the functions and effects of the teachingmodel of advance organizer on English reading teaching were analyzed and discussed hoping togive a hand to students’ English reading and our English reading teaching.The thesis first expounded the theory of English reading teaching and advance organizer,on the basis of which, an experiment was carried out to demonstrate whether the teachingmodel of advance organizer can contribute to English reading teaching, mainly focus onanswering the following two questions, that is:(1) Can the teaching model of advance organizercan change students’ attitude towards English reading and enable students to master somereading skills and strategies so as to improve students’ reading ability significantly?(2) Is theteaching model of advance organizer more effective for students’ reading ability than thetraditional teaching method? At last, according to the comparison between the scores before the experiment and those after the experiment as well as the analysis of the questionnaires and theinterviews, it proved that the teaching model of advance organizer can improve students’reading ability significantly, strengthen students’ reading interest; and at the same time studentsfoster good reading habits and master some reading strategies during the experiment.In a word, the implementation of the teaching model of advance organizer in Englishreading teaching is feasible and possible which will help to improve students’ reading abilityand improve the teaching status of our English reading.
