Research On University Class Advisors’ Status And Roles In The New Era

The past thirty years has witnessed great changes in China’s Higher education and a complex process of exploration and innovation in Chinese university administration system. As a significant force in university administration work, class advisors play a prominent and positive role in university students’ ideological and political education. It is important to strengthen the work of class advisors whose job is to give advice to students on their thinking, study and daily life. Therefore, it’s necessary to research on class advisors’ status and roles.Based on history, this thesis begins with the origin of university class advisor system. According to the development of education reforms in the New Era and The New Outline for Higher Education and other related government documents, this thesis divides the history of university class advisor system into five periods in order to analyze the different status and roles of class advisors in different periods. The purpose of this thesis is to offer useful materials for future university class advisors’ work. To fulfill this purpose, the author analyzes present class advisors’ work through questionnaire, analysis of historical data and positive study. First of all, the paper expounds the need for university class advisor’s work from the aspects of ideological education, school, students and teachers. Furthermore, this thesis researches on the present structure, selection process, assessment, training and functions of class advisors and studies the relationship between class advisors and tutors to put forward and proposals for class advisors on how to make best use of their advantages in their work. From all the above study, this paper points out the problems with the present university class advisor’s work and provides practical strategies by taking the example of NCUT. Finally, this thesis offers some new methods for future advisor’s work according to the new directive document. This thesis not only summarizes college the status and roles of university class advisors but also provides reasonable suggestions for their future work.
