The 21st century is the information era, the era of globalization, so the computer andinternet occupy an increasingly important position in people’s daily lives, learning and research.From a global perspective, the research and application of computer technology to supportteaching has a history of more than 45 years since the late 1950s. In China, the government hasattached the importance to the use of computer technology since the 1990s. And the Internet isused in schools more and more.With the increasing development of the process of globalization, more and more peopleconsider the computer technology and English as the essential knowledge and skills. With timepassing by, the improvement of the technology, as well as the constant pursuit of the people,multimedia technology and English teaching is gradually combined.In 1981, the World Conference on Computers in Education announced that reading andwriting ability of the human is the“first culture”. From this, we can see the importance ofreading in English teaching. So English reading teaching occupies significant proportion,however, how to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the teaching of English reading hasbecome teachers’confusion. Fortunately, the development of the multimedia technology hasbrought hope and opportunity to this issue, of course, it also brings challenges. The study ofmultimedia technology in high school English reading teaching also has become a hot field.In order to study the application of multimedia to English reading teaching in senior highschool better, the author analyzed the theory of use of the multimedia, especially the use ofmultimedia courseware, in the English reading teaching. And the author also put the theory intothe real classes to test its practical advantages. In order to get the effective data, during the study,the author taught the students in two different modes, the traditional one and the new one withmultimedia technology. The author is trying to clarify the advantages and disadvantages of themultimedia using in the English reading teaching according to the experiment and the surveys.Hope to explain the role of multimedia technology in English reading teaching in high schools,based on the results of the experiment and surveys.In this study, the main theories are constructivist learning theory, motivation theory andbehavioral learning theory. In the study, the author conducted a comparative experiment in twoclasses, and implemented a pre-test and post-test as a basis for comparative analysis. Theexperiment lasted for 10 weeks. Finally, the author made a summary and put forward theauthor’s own proposals according to the analysis. The main conclusions are as follows:First of all, it is obvious that the multimedia technology can benefit the English reading teaching in high schools. At the same time, however, there are many problems or confusion inthe process of the application of multimedia technology, especially when the teachers design anduse the multimedia courseware, such as: 1) how often the teacher should use the multimediatechnology in a class and how much information should be given via the courseware. 2)Students’dominant position sometimes is neglected by the teachers. 3) the rational allocationof the verbal communication between teachers and students and the multimedia technology(courseware). 4) The reunion of presupposition and productiveness of the multimedia courseware.The author proposed a few suggestions after the study: 1) Encouraging teachers to learn Englishreading teaching theory and multimedia-assisted teaching theory. 2)Adhering to humanism, tothe dominant position of the students. 3) Strengthening the learning of the students’knowledgeand attitude, creating a reasonable situation to stimulate the productiveness, and developing thestudents’creativity. 4) Paying attention to the combination of multimedia teaching mode andother teaching modes. 5) Improving the professional quality of teachers and encourage thelearning and discussions of advanced concepts, advanced technology. Besides these points, ofcourse, there are some limitations in this study, and the author also gave an explanation andanalysis.In short, this thesis is the practical research based on the author’s own teachingexperience. The author hopes this study can play a positive part in the research of usingmultimedia technology in teaching English reading. All in all, we really hope that the multimediatechnology can provide students with a better interactive learning platform to enhance theirability of learning English.
