China and Japan are neighbors across the sea; they had a long history of diplomatic relations. China used to have a profound impact on Japan. In mid-19century, the feudal rule of China and Japan were going to end. The gates of the two countries were opened by western powers with gunboats one after another and were forced to start the process of modernization. However, they had a very different development path. Ahead of other Asian countries, Japan took the initiative to absorb the advanced western culture, and apply it to their own practice, thus promoting the rapid development of Japanese civilization, and the first to enter the ranks of the modern nation in Asia. But China failed to escape the fate of the colonial. In the process of modernization of the two countries, tradition education began to change to modern education. It is what this paper try to discuss that education reform played what roles in the modernization of two countries.China now is developing at a high speed, and the influence of the world on us is increasing. How to ensure our nation has a rightful place in the world? Education is very important; it should play a positive guiding role. China is now in the social transition period, education needs to keep pace and adapt to social changes and to further promote social development. This paper hopes that by a Comparative Study of the education reform through the process of modernization of the two countries, drawing lessons from history, summed up the lessons learned in the two countries, give some useful insight to our China education reform.There are four parts in this paper. The first chapter:the political situation in the process of modernization and education reform. This chapter analyzes the difference of the two countries’ political changes and its impact of the modernization of education between the two countries. The second chapter:enlightenment and education reform in the process of modernization. This chapter analyzes the difference in culture background between the two countries and its impact on the modernization in three aspects. The third chapter: institutional factors in the process of modernization and education reform:the school system and school. This section analyzes the importance of institutional reform in education modernization and the difference in transformation of education system in China and Japan. The forth chapter is some inspiration for China’s education reform.
