As an important part of Fun with English, pictures have a remarkable effect onEnglish learning of the junior high school students. However, studies on the using ofpictures in textbooks, especially picture using strategies and analyses in teaching practice,remains insufficient so far. The new curriculum for junior high schools requires for newcurriculum training objectives from the dimensions of knowledge, ability and attitude,which requires teachers and students to change from knowledge transmitters and recipientsto common constructor of knowledge and resource. It means our teaching research shouldbreak through original research modes and seek new development. So there’s theoreticaland practical significance in a comprehensive and in-depth study on the picture using.This thesis has made systematical analyses on the pictures in the junior high schooltextbook Fun with English and their uses in class. Experiments are reported to explorethe correlation between the curriculum picture using and teaching effects. Variousfunctions of the textbook pictures and different strategies and principles were proposedaccording to different levels of the students, which has provided new modes of pictureusing to achieve classroom effectiveness. Results show picture using has obvious positiveeffect on the memory and comprehension of the teaching materials.Because of the theoretical level and limited research capacity,the author has only madea preliminary exploration and analyses on the development and use of textbook pictures.There’s much room for further researches on such topics as how to have the scientificevaluation of teaching effectiveness, how to quantify the effect of teaching, how to achieveshort-term, medium and long-term quantification of teaching effectiveness. Some otherpractical problems still need to be demonstrated through further experiments. Theseresearches contribute to forming a process or developmental evaluation system.
