| The National English Curriculum Standards for Common Senior High School(abbreviated as Curriculum Standards)has given a higher request for textbooks,which clearly notes that textbooks should arise students’ interest and develop students’ thoughts.Picture is such an important part of textbooks and such a kind of important teaching resource which can get students’ attention and arise students’ interest that researchers &teachers &editors should pay attention to it.However,the writer found that there are a few researchers working on it after checking literatures,especially basing on Dual Coding Theory.Dual Coding Theory requests verbal code and non-verbal code should construct certain relationship.So,how about the relationship between text corresponding to verbal code and visual information corresponding to non-verbal code? Through this paper,the writer tries to answer:(1)what’s the amount of senior high school textbooks of PEP?(2)what’s the distribution feature of senior high school textbooks of PEP?(3)what’s the relationship between pictures and texts of senior high school textbooks of PEP?This paper,using content analysis method and quantitative analysis method,taking book one to book five of PEP as object,analyses the pictures’ distribution feature and amount after dividing the object to 20 parts following the textbooks’ clue;Basing on Marsh & White’s arguments about picture and text,the writer analyses and gathers data through checking the materials one page by one page and collects data in EXCEL;At last,the writer researches those data broadwise and endwise according to Dual Coding Theory and related arguments.The results show that the amount of pictures on book one to book five of PEP is large and those pictures have important relationship with texts,which basically conform to Marsh & White’s and Dual Coding Theory‘s arguments,there is also a little conflict between pictures and texts.Pictures cover many parts and each part is different while those parts with long reading passage has the largest proportion;Moreover,each type of relationship has different proportion while the maximum relationships are stimulating &common pointing &matching style which are regarded as “clue” in cognition;Each part has different relationships and the different pictures of the same text have different relationships which show different pictures have different efficiency. |
