A Survey On Social Participation Of Urban Elder Women

Along with the intensification of the trend of population aging, the average lifeexpectancy of elder women is longer than that of elder men. So elder women become arapid increase in the scale of groups, and the aging population also appear femininefeatures. Severe population aging in the context of the historical, social, cultural, personalreasons such as their influence and other reasons, elder women often become the mostneed attention but not be concerned about, most in need of protection but often rights aredamaged. In today the family structure has changed. The family care function hasgradually weakened. And social security and social service have not perfect. So the issue ofelder women need to be given more attention. In order to deal with the serious problem ofaging population, the World’s Elderly General Assembly in2002had put forward theconcept of "active aging". And the core value of "active aging" is the communityinvolvement. Therefore, this paper chooses social participation in the angles to study theproblems of elder women, in order to promote the development of elder women of activeaging.In this paper, Patio Lake community in Tongling City, Anhui Province is taken as thesample to research. And the method of research combining quantitative and qualitative. Inthis paper, we research older women in the area of the social participation from fourdimensions such as political participation, economic participation, participate in culturaland recreational activities and social welfare activities. And from the variable of the basiccharacteristics of elderly women, family structure, work and economic situation to analyzethe impact of elder women’s social participation. The results of the research showed thatthe social participation of elder women is low. The ways of social participation are relativesingle. And social participation in obvious dependence and passivity. On the basis of this research, drawing on the experience of social participation about elder women of foreign,and giving some suggestions which in order to promote social participation in elderwomen.
