Study On Knowledge Modules Of Network Information Literacy Education About Master Of Engineering

In China, there are two graduate education models:academic degrees and professional degrees. Master of Engineering is a professional degree. Compared to Master of Science in Engineering, Master of Engineering training objectives focus on the improvement of the ability of engineering applications.Information literacy is one of the basic qualities in the information age. It was firstly proposed in America at1974, and introduced into China in the1990s. Information literacy contains information awareness, information knowledge, information capacity, information moral and so on. It is closely related to the teaching of information retrieval.In order to enhance the quality of the information literacy for Master of Engineering, in2007, the National Master of Engineering Teaching Steering Committee released a notice named "on the strengthening of Master of Engineering’ information retrieval’ construction", it is recommended that all colleges and universities set the information retrieval course to a required course for Master of Engineering.Now the most of information retrieval materials mainly introduce university library resources, this is suitable for master of science in engineering, but it is not very practical for Master of Engineering, because the main body of Master of Engineering is from the state-owned enterprises and mining companies, they learn at school while working.Their time of working in factories or mines much more than of learning in school.The goal of this paper is to provide useful information knowledge modules for Master of Engineering, which base on the information needs of them and select internet resources with the university library resources. The main methods are literature analysis, questionnaire survey, and analysis of books.The main idea of this paper is as follows:1Analysis of the characteristics of Master of Engineering from the source of students, training and other aspects. The importance of information literacy for them is illustrated from themselves and the external environment. We also analyze how to improve the level of information literacy of Master of Engineering.2Analysis of the practical information needs of Master of Engineering. We designed a survey questionnaire about network information needs of Master of Engineering. We find that Master of Engineering access information from the Internet, they need more work-related information, and often rely on search engines. 3Construction of Master of Engineering network information retrieval course. It is divided into three steps:firstly we analyze information retrieval books published in recent years, and integrate these chapters as the foundation of knowledge modules; secondly according to the findings of the network information needs of Master of Engineering, we screen the network resources related to the Master of Engineering; thirdly we melt the selected resources into the result of the first step, eventually build eight knowledge modules of the Master of Engineering network information retrieval course.
