Reading is one of the input methods in English learning, and reading in senior high schools is always thought highly due to its percentage in the College Entrance Examination. Teaching reading strategy is also one of the aims of New Curriculum Standard in senior high schools. Most of the researches about reading strategies are centering on whether the students are using different kinds of strategies, while there are less study about the procedures to train reading strategies in class. To get a better understanding of the reading materials and to speed up reading, teachers should know the psychology of reading process, and then on this basis, they can help the students to cultivate a better reading habit and develop their reading ability consciously. To make this happen, teachers not only need to teach the language points of reading materials, but also try to facilitate the students with certain strategy trainings. Taking some grade two students in San Yuan senior high school as study target, this thesis investigates the relationship between the improvement of reading comprehension and training of reading strategies. It proves that training reading strategies do help the students better understand reading materials and get higher scores in reading tests, and teachers should do more research about this and try to use this kind of method in class teaching.This thesis consists of six parts. The first part is an introduction, showing the importance of the ability to use reading strategies and the significance of this research. The second part is literature review, including different definitions and classifications of learning strategies and reading strategies. Also included is the present research situation in China and abroad. The third part provides this research with a theory basis, namely schema theory, meta-cognitive theory and discourse theory. The forth part is the main part of this study, which presents several ways and procedures in the practicing of reading strategies. Following part is the analysis of part four, showing that deliberate training of reading strategies is useful in improving students’reading score. The last part is a general conclusion and some deficiencies of this study, which also helps the teacher to reconsider their teaching methods and consciously make improvements.
