As a public educational institution, school is an important place to nurture public morality. It is believed that the environment of public school life has naturally an impact on the development of students’ public morality. However, here is the key question:does school really offer a sound public environment for nurturing students’ public morality?To answer this question, this paper attempts to reveal the connotation of publicity of public morality (i.e. public domain, shared community, publicly moral thinking, common morals and common purpose) from the following aspects:the space of behaviors, personal identity, the way of thinking, content, nature and purpose. As a standard, it observes and examines the publicity of school life such as classroom teaching, school management, class management etc. and analyze the loss of publicity in our school life. Finally, this paper explores the pursuit of school value based on publicity, and depict a kind of ideal public school life as a place of nurturing the public morality.Studies show that the school life has weaknesses and deficiencies which affects the cultivation of students’ public morality, for example, the private moral education has gradually taken the place of public ones resulting from generalization and abuse of private morals; people have become more and more indifferent to community because of the prevalence of egoism; the previous public life has been destroyed and distorted because of the decline of public communication and the absence of democratic life. Such unwholesome school life will necessarily lead to poor effect of public moral education.Studies show the following main reasons resulting in the loss of publicity of school life:the lost of public interests because of the inconsistency between educational goals and real measures; the disorder of school’s public environment resulting from ambiguity of school’s public space; a weak sense of community in schools resulting from one-sided pursuit of academic performance.Based on the above findings, this paper argues that for public moral education, school life should reflect the pursuit of the value of publicity and make some proper adjustments and improvements in the design of school rules, the cultivation of students’ way of moral thinking, classroom management, school management, self-management of students’associations and etc., so that we can create a sound public moral environment for students.
