The students of all kinds of higher education in2010was3105million, highereducation gross enrollment rate reached26.5%.However, during thedeveloping process, thematter of higher educationquality and regional unbalance gradually emerged. The NationalLong-term Education Reform and Development Plan (2010-2020)emphasized that thedevelopment of higher education must optimize the regional distribution structure and createda dynamic adjustment mechanism to meet the needs of national and regional economic andsocial development; So we have the necessary to analysis the spatial cluster of our Chinesehigher education, and to explore the law of regional educational development, so as to provideguidance and proposals for the sustainable development of higher education. To find out the dynamic differences in space and to reveal and explain the impact of thespatial differences of regional higher educational development, this article used the spatialstatistics methods to explore thespatial cluster of provincial higher education from Chineseregional development of higher education.First, this paper reviews the literature of the domestic and foreign scholars on regionalhigher education and spatial econometric methods, then defined the key concepts of region, higher education, and regional higher education, etc. Second, we studied the currentdevelopment situation of Chinese provincial higher education from the differentperspectives. Third, using Generalized Principal Component Analysis to analysis provincial highereducation based on the datafrom1997to2009, this showed that the developmentlevel ofprovincial was unequal. Fourth, analysised the spatial cluster of Chinese provincial highereducation by ESDA, and the result showed that its spatial cluster becomes more and moreobvious, and there is a notable accumulative feature all the time. In addition, we explained theresults of the present pattern of Chinese higher education from policy, economy, physicalgeography environment, and so on. Finally, proposed some solutions.
