Shanghai was liberated in May1949, new peoples regime beganto takeover the enterprises and businesses run by former Kuomintanggovernment. Seven Christian universities in Shanghai were took overone after the other,and reformed of the administrative organization,course offering and teaching management under the guidance of therelated educational department of the CCP. At the same time, in orderto solve the "thought problem" of teachers and students existed inChristian universities, CCP carried out the ideological learningmovement, setting up political lectures, and studying current affairs toincrease the ideological and political education of students andteachers in Christian universities, and gradually to strengthen the controlof Christian universities. The outbreak of the War to Resist U.S. Aggressionand Aid Korea in October1950was a turning point of the fate ofChristian university in China. Under the influence of China and theUnited States in a serious confrontation, and the CCP "one-sided"Foreign Policy, the Chinese government began to take over churchschools opened by foreign missionary in China in January1951, toregain the educational sovereignty, and launched the ideologicalreform movements which eliminated U.S. cultural influence as thetheme in every Christian university. Finally, Christian universities weremerged into other public and private universities in the restructuring ofdepartments among national different colleges in1952, and graduallyto die out.Although Christian universities in Shanghai had a great influence onthe formation of the modern educational system in Shanghai andChina, has not escaped the fate of the demise in China. This papermainly described St.Johns University, Shanghai University, BusinessSchool of Shanghai University, Aurora University, Soochow Law School, Aurora Womens University of Arts and Department of Architecture ofHangchow University. These seven church universities in Shanghai haddisappeared, but worthy to research the course of taking over andrestructuring gradually in1949and1952, and a brief analysis of thereasons for its demise and the status of Christian universities in Shanghaifor the Shanghai educational modernization. Finally, summarize theexperience and lessons of the CCP and the government took over andreorganized the Christian universities in Shanghai, also can provide auseful and historical reference for the great development of Chinesehigher education in future.
