A Study On High School Students’ Extracurricular English Reading Under The Background Of New Curriculum

New English Curriculum Standard, which advocates quality education, focuses oncultivating students’ comprehensive ability to use English, and it also gives detailedrequirements of basic English reading ability and extracurricular English reading amount forhigh school students. As an adjunct of class English learning, extracurricular English readinggreatly broadens students’ horizons and effectively activates students’ interests in Englishlearning with its rich contents and various forms, and it also plays an active role in enhancingstudents’ English overall level: on one hand, students can consolidate basic Englishknowledge learned in class and learn more about the meaning and usage of basic Englishknowledge; on the other hand, students can also practice English reading skills throughextracurricular English reading, strengthen English reading confidence and know well aboutbackground knowledge of western culture.How is the current situation of high school extracurricular English reading? Has it gotattention from both students and teachers? Which material have high school students mainlychosen? What’s wrong with students’ extracurricular English reading and how is it solved?How about the attitude and participation of English teachers in this process? English teachers,researchers and experts generally pay attention to these questions. The author aims atmastering the authentic situation of high school extracurricular English reading, explores thecorresponding measures on the basis of theoretical research products and survey reaults atpresent. Using the literature method, this paper analyzes relevant theories of reading, studiesof extracurricular English reading at home and abroad and domestic high schoolextracurricular English reading so as to afford sufficient theoretical supports for high schoolextracurricular English reading. Based on these theories, the author designs the questionnaireand interview questions to analyze the situation of high school students’ extracurricularEnglish reading and teachers’ participation in it. By concluding the survey data, we can seethat students and teachers have realized the importance of extracurricular English reading andhave been all ready to do it. There are also some problems: not well-planned extracurricularEnglish reading program, shortage of English reading materials, various reading difficulties,reading difficulties can not be effectively solved, teachers haven’t played efficient roles etc.In view of situations above, the author proposes that teachers and students should formulate layered and problem-focused reading program, flexibly use extracurricular reading materialsin different forms, solve reading difficulties in both individual and cooperative ways andteachers actively participate in it and give advice from the beginning to the end.Based on real and effective survey data, the innovation of this paper is that it studiesfrom students’ and teachers’ two different angles, and it proposes corresponding suggestionsaccording to different grades and scores of students, in order to effectively solve the problemsthat exist in high school extracurricular English reading at present.
