According to “the Guidelines of the National Program for Medium-and Long-TermEducational Reform and Development” which was issued in February,2009,“Possibility and Feasibility of Dividing of Science and Art” was listed as one of thetwenty major problems which affect Chinese further educational development. Recently,Ministry of Education of china was collecting opinions on it and arousing wide publicconcern. In china, dividing of Science and Art in ordinary high school stage not onlydominates the relationship between the individual and the society development, but alsohas the significant influence on the long-term health development for human civilization.People believe that dividing of Science and Art in high school is a directly expressionfor the belief that knowledge and personnel training should be professional. However,along with the development of modern education, the professional knowledge which isproposed by Whitehead has confronted with risks.In this dissertation, based on the philosophy of organism and liberal educationthought of Whitehead, the author analyzes the problem of dividing of Science and Art inhigh school, and reminds that the world should not boost dividing of Science and Art forthe immediate benefit of small and ignores the long-term development for humancivilization. Finally, the author proposes the fusion of Science and Art and expounds itsnecessity.There are four chapters in this dissertation:Chapter one is the reface. In this chapter, the background, research contents,research purposes, research methods, concept definition and innovation are introducedin short. Moreover, research Status of Whitehead’s thought and his liberal educationthought and the relevance references are analyzed.Chapter two is the outline of dividing of Science and Art. In this chapter, firstly, thehistorical evolution of dividing of Science and Art in china and abroad is introduced.Thereafter, the wide dispute over “the Guidelines of the National Program for Medium-and Long-Term Educational Reform and Development” is introduced. Meantime, thebasic opinion of the two parties in the dispute and the basic contents of the Guidelinesabout dividing of Science and Art is also introduced. Chapter three is Whitehead’s organic world and his Liberal education thought. In thischapter, firstly, the Whitehead ’s life is introduced. Then, his philosophy of organism isintroduced. Finally, his liberal education thought is introduced.Chapter four is the necessity of the fusion of Science and Art. In this chapter, theauthor proposes that the barrier which is built by the dividing of Science and Art in highschool should be break. According to reduce the burden of study, promote the all-rounddevelopment of students, join secondary with higher education, meet the international standard,repair knowledge contact between the old, expand the human understanding, the necessity of thefusion of Science and Art is expounded in detail, and finally the author has drawn theconclusion that the dividing of Science and Art should be abolished in china.
