The development of higher education is the harmonious development of the quantity, quality, structure and effectiveness. With the continuous expansion of the scale of higher education, quality also caused widespread concern of the public. To improve the quality of higher education, the institution of higher education has taken a series of measures to deepen the education reform, including the semester reform. Three-semester is used by majority of colleges and universities as an important section of semester reform. But research on the three-semester has not achieved an integral system, only through a systematic research can we make more accurate and scientific judgment on the consequences of the reform based on rational points, respond reasonably, improve the connotation of three semesters constantly, and then improve the quality of higher education.This paper attempts to grasp the three-semester system by the documentary method from the vertical angle, to clarity the theoretical cornerstone of the three-semester system; it takes Shanxi University for example, using documentary method, questionnaire, interview from the horizontal angle, in order to analyze the implementation of trimester in China and the relation between its intended target and practices. Combined with other universities, the writer draws that:three-semester system of higher education have achieved good effects in the promotion of students’ individual socialization and personification, in promoting teachers’ self-growth, in optimizing the course structure, and so on. The three-semester system, in aspects of guiding students to select courses, improving the curriculum quality and increasing lectures, is still need to be perfected. In a word, reflection and prospection of the three-semester system in China:the trimester implementation or not depends on the situation of colleges and even a specific subject closely. We have to rationally deal with the three-semester system, to ensure that the people-oriented, to achieve the scientific purposes of teaching, to pay attention to the implementation of supporting management measures, to build a reasonable system of course and evaluation system.
