Primary School "thinking" Activity Teacher Competence Characteristics Research

Research on teacher competency has become a hot spot in the education research field recently. To be more and more deeply and particularity, it has become an inexorable trend to study on teacher competency aimed at single education time quantum, and single subject. As a new think training curriculum which aimed at develop students’thinking methods or strategies and improving the quality of thinking, it requires unique teacher competences of "Learn to Think"(LTT) curriculum. This study with the primary school LTT teacher for the subject, first adopts interviews to set up the primary school LTT teachers’competency model, which as a basic of the primary school LTT teachers competency questionnaire later, then uses the questionnaire to measure the current lever of teachers. At last, gives some teacher training advices based on the competency current characters.The research collects key behavior event materials through behavior event interview, focus group interview and unstructured interview, then coding analyses these materials based on the international competency dictionary, abstracts fourteen basic competences of primary school LTT teacher which composes the Primary School LTT Teacher Competency Dictionary (PSLTCD). It concludes Student Necessary Meeting, Developing Students, Understanding Students, Listening and responding, Teamwork guiding, Relationship Building and Keeping, Professional Knowledge, Conceptual Thinking, Analytical Thinking, Achievement Orientation, Self-Confidence, Flexibility, Initiative, Self-Control. On the base of the PSLTCD, sorting the frequencies and scores on each competence and comparing with the excellent teachers and normal teachers, it obtains a result of abstraction of ten key competences, which are Student Necessary Orientation, Understanding Students, Conceptual Thinking, Analytical Thinking, Motive Orientation, Initiative, Listening and responding, Self-Confidence, Professional Knowledge, Creative Personalities. The basic competences and the key competences constitute the Primary LTT Teacher Competence model.Guided by the Primary LTT Teacher Competence model, on one hand, the research collects teachers’ classic LTT teaching situations and reactions by the mean of interviews, classroom observations and self teachings, then the situational judgment test of primary LTT teacher was invented, on the other hand, the self-talk creative personality questionnaire was used to test primary LTT teachers’creative personality, these two parts constituted the Primary LTT Teacher Competency Questionnaire.By using the Primary LTT Teacher Competency Questionnaire to survey the76in-service primary LTT teachers, finds that their Achievement Orientation,Conceptual Thinking, Analytical Thinking, Self-Confidence level are lower than the expectation level, the others are just achieve the basic level, but fail to achieve the expectation level. The survey result also shows that, there only two teachers’total competence scores achieve the superexcellent level, about11.8percent teacher achieve the excellent level, about31.6percent teachers reaches the good level, and about48.7%teachers performance at an average level, and the other5.2percent of teachers are even worse, they fail to achieve the basic criterion. The survey also found that, teachers from each competency level all have large demands of participating professional trains.4.On the base of the above results, the paper gives the following advices about teacher competency training: firstly, selects the superexcellent teachers as the training instructor and eliminates the poor performance teachers; secondly, make detailed teacher training plan for the other80percent LTT teachers, the plan concludes the analysis of the training needs, the formulations of the training objectives, the advices about training organizations, training contents and methods, tools of evaluation training effects and so on.
