Funding for education is an important material foundation for the development of higher education. The trend of rapid popularization of higher education display that the education in our country is developing by leaps and bounds now, but the problem of the shortage of higher education funding has become increasingly evident, which is a serious impediment to the further development of China’s higher education career. The key to solve the problem is to change this single mode of financing in which the higher education is mainly supported by the national financial allocations, and gradually form a diversification of sources in higher education funding, it would be an effective way to fight for social donation to support higher education in China. It can be said that the social donation is not any a public good, but also an important channel for universities to raise fundsFor a long time, our colleges and universities has been relying on State funding, and the dependency deeply influences most of the colleges and universities which pay less attention to social donation, and thus these schools in China don’t accumulate enough experience about the work of social donation. What’s more, we haven’t yet worked out a complete set of laws and regulations on social donation for the university community, which severely restricts the development of China’s higher education. Therefore, it has important practical significance to learn from the successful experience of the West and the United States which have been working on social donation for a long time. Cornell University, a well-known institution of higher learning in the world, has a long history of social donation, the author will study Cornell University as a specific case, in order to show the situation of their social donation comprehensively, and extract some successful experience from Cornell University to guide our universities to carry out the work of social donation.In addition to the introduction, the five main aspects are discussed. Introduction section includes the issues raised, the significance of research, literature review, the definition and research methods, the main content of the other five parts:The first chapter displays and analyzes the course of the development of social donation in Cornell University from a historical point, it is mainly divided into two stages:the early passive social donation and the active social donation in the end of the twentieth century during which Cornell University gradually took the initiative to fight for social donation and became more professional; The second chapter researches and analyzes the status quo of the social donation in Cornell University. In this part, it is respectively from donation individuals, donation forms and donation activities to discuss; In Chapter III, the management and operation of social donation in Cornell University are described and analyzed, mainly including the Cornell University’s social financing system, the types of investments of the Fund and the allocation of the received donation; Chapter IV analyzes the factors that affect the social donation of Cornell University, mainly from the social environment in the United States, including a strong social donation culture and relevant laws and regulations, as well as from Cornell University own unique characteristics of schooling; Chapter V analyzes and summarizes the scientific and successful experience taken by Cornell University on the social donation first, and then with combining the status of Chinese Universities social donation to put forward some recommendations to promote the development of social donation in our country. These include:1, creating a good atmosphere of donations to the student in the whole of society;2,developing and improving relevant laws and regulations is fundamental to the success of social donation;3, gradually establishing independent business awareness, focusing on the commercialization of brand image building;4,strengthening the responsibilities of the principal community to raise funds;5,developing students’sense of return to his alma mater, exploring the potential of alumni donations;6, donor interests and the interests of the school development in close connection with the demand for capital;7, the full mobilize to all social forces, to explore more potential donors;8, setting up specifically raising funds institutions is the protection of fund-raising success of the organization.
